What you need to apply
- Industry experience and demonstrated expertise in your field
- A relevant trade, vocational or tertiary qualification
- Current industry knowledge and skills
- Relevant licences, registrations or tickets (if required)
- Digital capability and willingness to manage administration tasks
- Australian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or valid work visa
- Required clearances (eg Working with Children Check)
You’ll also need a VET trainer qualification (Certificate IV in Training and Assessment). For more information, talk to your local TAFE college about gaining the qualification so you can teach at TAFE.

No. You can start in the role and complete your VET trainer qualification with support from TAFE WA.
You must have a trade, vocational or tertiary qualification for your field of expertise, and any licences or registrations that are currently required to work in your field. In order to teach a certificate level or diploma course, as a minimum, you’ll need to have that level qualification yourself. Most importantly, you’ll bring your current industry knowledge, practical skills and real-world experience that can be shared with students.
Lecturers are required to hold or obtain a VET trainer qualification (Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40116 or equivalent) to deliver accredited vocational education and training in accordance with the Registered Training Organisation Standards. No prior lecturing experience is required. Applicants who do not have this qualification are strongly encouraged to apply. WA TAFE colleges support their employees through free in-house training and up to 160 hours of working time to attain the qualification.

- North Metropolitan TAFE: 9 campuses spread across Perth’s north and north east metropolitan area including Balga, Clarkson, East Perth, Joondalup, Leederville, Midland, Mount Lawley and Perth.
- North Regional TAFE: 11 campuses located across the north of Western Australia including Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Karratha, Kununurra, Minurmarghali Mia (Roebourne), Newman, Pundulmurra (Hedland), Tom Price and Wyndham.
