Troy Rodger
former BHP Billiton worker

How long were you employed with BHP Billiton?

I worked at BHP's Ravensthorpe nickel mine for just over two years as a production technician.

What impact did being made redundant have on you?

After the announcement was made to shut down Ravensthorpe, it was initially hard to take. I thought my job was safe working with such a large company even through tough times. What made it worse was that the job market was retracting, making it harder to find a job while trying to cover my mortgage and personal debts.

How did you learn about Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

I was interested in getting into the oil and gas industry but my work experience has been solely in mining. A friend who works for an oil and gas company suggested gaining a formal qualification by obtaining a certificate that is highly recognised by the oil and gas industry. I was put in contact with the Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training at Challenger TAFE and enrolled in Process Plant Technology.

What did you need to do to obtain an RPL qualification and how long did it take?

With an RPL qualification you must complete the required number of units outlined within the certificate. These units involve dealing with a range of equipment, issues and procedures related to your workplace. I was required to provide practical, written, visual or verbal evidence of my skills to Challenger TAFE with the help of my former BHP onsite trainer and assessor. When all the evidence was obtained for the units required, Challenger signed me off as competent. It took me just over three months to complete all units.

What qualification did you obtain?

I obtained a Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology.

What are the benefits to you of having gone to TAFE to gain a formal qualification?

Gaining formal qualifications, I believe, shows an employer that you are willing to go out of your way to display your interest and commitment within that field of expertise. You are then recognised for having the ability and knowledge to work within that industry, offering a far greater chance of employment.

What does the future hold for you now?

A greater opportunity to gain a position within the oil and gas industry, where I can build new skills and face new challenges.
