There are a range of courses available to assist migrants to gain access to education and training opportunities. Some of these courses focus on English language skills first and lead into further career studies. Bridging and entry courses can be a great place to start.

Adult literacy
The Certificates in General Education for Adults provide training in reading, writing, basic maths and study skills. They can be used as an entry qualification for other TAFEWA qualifications.

The Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program has three streams—language (English as a second language basic and advanced), literacy and numeracy. You must be registered as unemployed with Centrelink to participate in this program.

Adult English language classes are available at various TAFEWA colleges for migrants to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking. Classes are available full-time and part-time. Independent Learning Centres, which are available at several TAFEWA colleges, provide facilities for students either as an alternative or in addition to formal classes.
Migrants and refugees may be eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program for up to 510 hours of English classes. The program is offered through:

The Overseas Qualifications Unit
The Overseas Qualifications Unit can assist you in gaining recognition of any qualifications gained overseas.
Key functions of the Overseas Qualification Unit include:

- Providing information about procedures, assessment, pre-requisites and regulations.

- Arranging referrals to licensing/regulatory bodies, employment, education and training providers.

- Providing assessment letters that compare overseas qualifications with Australian educational awards. These letters may assist you in accessing employment and further education.

- Providing career guidance to migrants on employment together with education and training pathways for career development.
The Overseas Qualification Unit also develops and coordinates overseas skills recognition projects aimed at relieving skills shortages and removing barriers for entry into the Western Australian labour market.
