The TAFEWA Plus initiative operates from each TAFEWA college and its purpose is to provide students and graduates with career management skills. While the way the TAFEWA Plus is delivered varies between colleges in accordance with local priorities, some TAFEWA Plus services are listed below:
- Career guidance to individuals and groups - assisting them to identify and develop personal goals, pathways and plans
- Job search skills and labour market awareness
- Employability skills workshops (often in partnership with the Employment Directions Network). These involve: resume preparation, resume writing software, addressing selection criteria, interview skills and techniques
- Establishment of a clothes library, from which students could borrow clothes for interviews
- Delivery of workshops exploring the self employment options
- Arranged industry guest speakers and lunchtime guest speakers
- Proactively support students and graduates to explore or uptake industry job opportunities, via a dynamic college register of job-ready students/graduates and employers
- Self-help facilities and resources for students, including career related videos and CDs, job files, computing facilities, phone, fax, photocopier, videos and career development CDs
- Some colleges have appointed careers counsellors
A recent evaluation of the initiative found it to be highly successful and feedback from students and graduates included:
'TAFEWA is a place to get the whole package deal with respect to getting your education and career on track.'
'The workshops prepared me for the unexpected ... without attending the workshops I would not have been successful in gaining employment.'
'I found (it) most useful as I have never been shown how to do this before...(it) was fantastic as it provided me with the confidence and assurance to set realistic goals and make career decisions.'
According to TAFEWA colleges, mature age students reported they have benefited enormously from TAFEWA Plus. Comments included:
'For a mature age student wanting career paths, I was encouraged to succeed from the first day I attended. Without the support I would have thrown in the towel at a very early stage.'
'The information provided was very thorough...have not had to apply for a job in many years, the workshop was an eye opener and is a prerequisite for anyone looking for work.'
